Welcome

Welcome

ScienceWriters2023 is presented by the National Association of Science Writers and the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing in collaboration with our local hosts, University of Colorado Boulder and University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus who share a warm welcome to their cities and institutions below.

Will this be your first time attending the ScienceWriters conference? NASW volunteers have developed several offerings intended to help you make connections and ease into your first ScienceWriters conference. Before the conference starts, join us for a virtual meet and greet on September 13 for information about the conference and to meet other attendees. Once the in-person festivities begin, join us on Friday, October 6 for a first-time attendee meet-up and then on Monday to regroup toward the end of the conference. Check out the schedule for more details!

And Welcome to Colorado!

Boulder is a perfect balance of urban and outdoors. Known for its stellar food scene, breweries, an always-exciting downtown, and more outdoor activities than you can count, the city is just 30 minutes northwest of Denver, where the Rocky Mountains meet the plains.

With the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop, enjoy the sunset at Chautauqua Park or take a stroll down our popular pedestrian mall, historic Pearl Street, and soak in amazing views while enjoying a great selection of restaurants, bookstores, boutiques and sidewalk cafes.

If you’re drawn to outdoor activities, plan time to explore the 300 miles of captivating hiking and biking trails and 45,000 acres of unspoiled open space. Kayak, rock climb, cycle, paddleboard, ski, or ride for the first time. The outdoor adventure scene is totally accessible to beginners and thrilling to experts.

Connected by proximity and Colfax Avenue, Denver and Aurora offer an abundance of culture, cuisine and much more that welcomes visitors from around the world to the front range. Originally the first stop for westward travelers on their way to the mountains, Aurora, home to the CU Anschutz Medical Campus, is widely known as a foodie paradise, boasting an incredible array of international eateries, local haunts, breweries, coffee roasters, food halls and so much more.

With its skyline looming in sight from wherever you are in Aurora, downtown Denver is an easy drive from campus. The Mile High City is a can’t-miss destination for visitors seeking a truly Colorado getaway. Museums include History Colorado, Denver Art, Meow Wolf, Natural History museum and so many more. Union Station is an historic and beautiful hub for exploration offering a variety of dining options, drinks and shopping. Outside of the city center, each neighborhood boasts its own identity and curation of restaurants and businesses to entertain, most centered around and named after a beautiful urban park. Check out the Highlands, Cap Hill, Cheesman Park, City Park, Washington Park and the bustling Tennyson Street district.
